Ellen Queeney, LICSW
My Background
I completed my Master of Social Work degree from Boston University in 1998 with a major in clinical social work. My love for working with young children led me to The Preschool Outreach Program at The Home for Little Wanderers—a non-profit social service agency-- located in Boston. During many years of employment at “The Home” I worked as a child and family therapist and consultant and trainer for Head Start and preschool programs throughout the city. Additionally, I served as a clinical supervisor for junior social workers on the program staff, eventually accepting the position of Program Director.
I received my Master’s of Divinity in 1997 as part of a Dual Masters program at Boston University. I majored in pastoral counseling where I focused on family therapy and the role of religious faith and values in addressing the needs of clients in psychotherapy.
I also spent several years working and volunteering in other countries as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer. My first tour of service was in a small village in the country of Burkina Faso, West Africa. More recently I returned from two years serving as a volunteer on the island of Samar in the Philippines. These experiences have added to my understanding of, and sensitivity to, cross cultural work. I am particularly interested in how issues of race and class inform and support my relationships with my clients.
My Role as a Therapist
I truly believe that each person deserves to live a life that reflects their authentic self. Often in the process of growing up and coming into adulthood we find ourselves challenged to stay true to this authenticity: perhaps we have hidden it from ourselves, or it has been covered over by years of others’ expectations or social pressures that tell us that we cannot be who we truly are. Therapy at any age and stage in a person’s life can offer a way to uncover, or rediscover, the truest and most authentic parts of ourselves.
